Your Family – Adoption, Estate Planning, & Probate Services

Adoption
Attorney Sherry Neal handles all adoptions for the firm, providing experienced legal help to families who wish to grow through adoption. With a focus on domestic adoption and the domestication of foreign adoptions, Sherry represents primarily adoptive parents. While Sherry typically practices in the Metro Atlanta area, her adoption cases have taken her to a number of counties throughout Georgia. Whether the adoption is completely local or crosses state lines, through a private or state agency, or via private placement, Sherry works with clients during all stages of the adoption process. In addition, she enjoys working with all types of adoptive parents: stepparents; grandparents and other relatives planning to adopt children already in their care; foster parents; married couples; same-sex couples; and singles.

Unsealing Adoption Records
Sherry also handles petitions for unsealing adoption records. Families occasionally need access to information contained in adoption records following finalization of the adoption. Perhaps the original adoption records were lost, stolen, or destroyed. Perhaps an adult adopted as a child needs to determine a biological parent’s identity in order to obtain medical information. People seeking such information must first go through the Reunion Registry, but, on occasion, are not able to obtain information via that route and must resort to filing a petition with the court requesting the needed information. People who can request records include: people who have been adopted (“adoptees”), biological siblings of adoptees, children of deceased adoptees, biological parents, parents and siblings of deceased biological parents, and adoptive parents. Whatever the situation, Sherry can assist with seeking needed information.

Estate Planning and Special Needs Trusts
The attorneys of Neal & Wright LLC understand that every family – even those with limited financial resources and especially those who may leave behind family members with special needs – needs an estate plan. We help clients establish estate plans tailored to protect the needs of their loved ones. Whether a client simply needs to update an existing Will or is starting from scratch, the firm assists with the preparation of the Will, including any trusts. We also help our clients create powers of attorney for financial matters and advance directives for healthcare – documents that express their wishes for their care or appoint another person to make healthcare decisions if they become unable to make those decisions themselves. If a client’s loved one has a disability, we prepare a special needs trust, which can protect eligibility for Medicaid and/or Supplemental Security Income (SSI).

If you have questions specifically about special needs trusts, please download, complete, and return the special needs trust questionnaire on the “Contact Us” page or contact Sherry.

If you have questions about our estate planning services generally, or are having trouble downloading or viewing any of our questionnaires, you may email or call Sherry or Dan. Our contact information may be found on our “Contact Us” page.

Probate
When a loved one passes on, the person who is named the executor in the Will or, if there is no Will, the person who has the best knowledge of the loved one’s wishes and business, must go to the Probate Court to take care of the estate. For most people, it can be a daunting situation. Attorney Dan Wright can help clients navigate the probate process and streamline the legal process during these difficult times.

If you have questions about our probate services, please visit our “Contact Us” page and download and complete the probate questionnaire or contact Dan.

Obtaining Delayed Certificates of Birth
If your or your child was born at home and no birth certificate was obtained at the time of birth, Sherry can assist with obtaining a delayed certificate of birth, either through the administrative process or by filing a petition if the administrative process has been exhausted.

If you have questions about unsealing adoption records, please contact Sherry. Sherry's contact information may be found on the “Contact Us” page.
